By Zoila Palma: Health officials are expressing concern over a significant resurgence of measles across the Americas as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported more than 20,000 confirmed cases and 25 deaths across the region this year, prompting renewed warnings about the risk of disease transmission during large international gatherings.
According to PAHO, measles cases reported between January and mid-May were four times higher than those recorded during the same period in 2025 and have already surpassed the total number reported throughout all of last year.
Mexico has recorded the highest number of infections with 10,920 cases and 13 deaths, followed by Guatemala with 6,209 cases and 12 deaths. Canada has reported 1,018 cases, while the United States has documented 1,952. Additional infections have been identified in Peru, Belize and several other countries in the region.
PAHO warned that increased international travel and ongoing transmission create favorable conditions for the spread of measles ahead of the World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
More than 6 million spectators are expected to attend the tournament’s 104 matches, which will be played across 16 host cities.
PAHO has urged countries to strengthen disease surveillance in high-risk locations such as border crossings, airports, ports and major event venues.
