By Zoila Palma: Former Cuban president Raúl Castro made his first public appearance since being indicted by the United States, attending a celebration of his 95th birthday in Havana alongside senior government officials and military leaders.
State television footage showed Castro arriving at the Ministry of Interior in his olive-green military uniform to a standing ovation, accompanied by his grandson and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
The event provided Cuba’s government with an opportunity to demonstrate unity and defiance as tensions with the United States continue to rise.
During the ceremony, Díaz-Canel praised Castro’s “heroism and dignity” and credited him with decades of service to the country, noting that his courage and loyalty had made him a target of foreign intelligence services from an early age.
In remarks directed at the United States, Díaz-Canel warned that Cuba would respond decisively to any threats against the island. Referring to a slogan that has appeared across Havana since Castro’s indictment, he declared, “Raúl is Cuba, and Cuba is untouchable,” portraying the former leader as a symbol of national unity amid growing external pressure.
