By Zoila Palma: Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett, has called on the region to accelerate efforts toward a sustainable future as the Caribbean marks World Environment Day 2026 under the theme, “Now For Climate – Accelerating the Transition to a Sustainable Future.”
In her message on June 5, Dr. Barnett emphasized the urgent need for collective action, noting that climate change continues to pose significant threats to the Caribbean’s development, livelihoods, and overall security.
Highlighting the region’s vulnerability to climate impacts, Dr. Barnett said, “As we observe World Environment Day 2026, we do so cognisant of the reality that our shared Caribbean home is on the frontline of climate change.”
She pointed to stronger hurricanes, prolonged droughts, coastal erosion, coral bleaching, flooding, food insecurity, and growing economic losses as evidence of the challenges facing Caribbean nations. Despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, she noted that Caribbean countries remain among the most vulnerable to climate-related impacts.
The Secretary-General stressed that the region’s response must be rooted in resilience and innovation. She noted that investments in renewable energy, including wind, solar, hydropower, and geothermal technologies, are strengthening energy security while creating new economic opportunities. Dr. Barnett added that climate-smart agriculture, sustainable fisheries, water conservation, and regional food production initiatives are also critical to reducing vulnerability and protecting livelihoods. “However, we define ourselves not by vulnerability, but by resilience and innovation,” she stated.
Dr. Barnett also underscored the importance of partnerships beyond government, calling on all sectors of society to contribute to the climate transition. “We acknowledge that governments alone cannot drive this transition. The private sector, financial institutions, civil society and academia must be active partners in green investment and innovation, supporting sustainable business models and generating Caribbean solutions to Caribbean challenges,” she said. She further emphasized that regional cooperation will remain essential in areas such as renewable energy integration, disaster risk management, sustainable transportation, blue economy development, and climate data systems, while encouraging greater involvement of young people in shaping the region’s future.
Reaffirming CARICOM’s leadership in international climate advocacy, Dr. Barnett noted that Caribbean nations have consistently championed efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, a goal she described as critical to the region’s survival. She concluded with a call to action, stating, “Let us continue to move forward with urgency, unity, and purpose as we accelerate the transition to a sustainable future.”
