By Zoila Palma:  Political momentum is building in San Ignacio and Santa Elena as parties and supporters begin positioning ahead of the 2027 municipal elections, with debate intensifying over continuity versus change in local leadership.

Supporters of United Democratic Party (UDP)’s Mayor Earl Trapp are defending his long tenure in office, arguing that his administration has delivered stability and continued development for the twin towns. Trapp, who has been in office since 2015, is preparing to seek another term, which would extend his leadership into a 5th consecutive mandate.

UDP supporters say the current administration has maintained steady municipal services and infrastructure improvements, questioning the need for a leadership change arguing “why change what’s working?”

But, opposition voices, including supporters of the People’s United Party (PUP) and Councillor Aaron Mai, are calling for new leadership, saying the town is ready for a shift in direction. They argue that fresh ideas and renewed energy are needed in local governance.

Mai’s supporters say that there is a need for “new blood” in municipal leadership, suggesting that long-serving officials may have become disconnected from community concerns.

As the 2027 municipal elections approach, PUP and UDP are expected to intensify campaigns with San Ignacio and Santa Elena Towns being major battlegrounds for both parties.
