By Zoila Palma: FIFA has been ordered to answer questions over allegations that it misled fans and artificially inflated ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup, BBC reports.
The attorneys general of New York and New Jersey have officially launched an investigation into FIFA’s ticket sales practices, with New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport describing the process as a “gauntlet of confusion, fake scarcity and impossibly high prices.”
Davenport announced the investigation alongside New York Attorney General Letitia James and the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.
FIFA has reportedly been subpoenaed to provide information and internal documents related to ticket sales. Officials said the investigation will examine allegations of deceptive conduct, including misleading supporters about seat locations and inflating prices.
Authorities are particularly seeking explanations for why ticket prices have surpassed those of previous World Cup tournaments. Fans have reported confusion over seating locations and complained about more expensive “front” category tickets being introduced after initial sales. It is also alleged that variable pricing across sales phases enabled FIFA to raise prices for around 90 of the tournament’s 104 matches by an average of 34 percent.
While FIFA has declined to comment, officials said they would review how ticket release schedules and public statements may have influenced prices.
