By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s military showcased three robot patrol dogs on Tuesday that could eventually be deployed to the island’s territories in the disputed South China Sea, Reuters report.
The demonstration, held at the defence ministry, highlighted Taiwan’s continued efforts to modernize its armed forces.
The robot dogs were presented by the military-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and were built by U.S.-based Ghost Robotics, a supplier of four-legged military robots. The institute fitted the machines with its own technology, creating versions designed for reconnaissance, surveillance and firepower. One of the robots featured a mounted gun.
Jen Kuo-kuang, deputy head of the institute’s missile and rocket systems research division, said the military had expressed a need for the equipment, although no formal purchase order has yet been made.
He said the marines see an urgent need for such technology on beaches and coastlines, including patrol and inspection duties for the coast guard stationed in Nansha and Dongsha, referring to the Spratly and Pratas Islands.
