According to Ann-Olguetty Loodjenny Dieuve (Chokarella), Haitian writer Jean Wood Jude, often called the Silent Poet [Poète Silencieux], recently published his first novel, L’Énigme des douze portes du ciel (C3 Éditions, 2026). In Haiti, he is one of the invited guests at the well-known book fair Livres en folie, now in its 32nd edition. He will present his novel and host a book-signing event at the fair on June 4, 2026. Loodjenny Dieuve describes the novel as a blend of mystery, noir, and supernatural elements. Here are translated excerpts from her article, “L’Énigme des douze portes du ciel : Poète Silencieux signe son premier roman.”

Poète Silencieux, slam poet and writer, had already published his first collection of poems, La valse d’un cœur silencieux ou Pantalèt kè m, in September 2024. In this second work, he explores themes such as corruption, religion, the exoticism of homosexuality, and crime, thus extending the continuity of his literary influences.

In an interview with Chokarella, the author discusses the genesis of his novel. Regarding the idea behind the story, he explains: “It had been percolating for a long time, going back to my earliest childhood readings.” He mentions the influence of authors like Gary Victor and the American thriller writer Mary Higgins Clark. “As I grew up, my desire to create similar worlds only intensified,” he adds.

A novel at the heart of a sensitive debate

The plot unfolds in Haiti, in a context marked by crime, political instability, and gang violence. The author raises the question: what if the armed groups weren’t the only ones committing crimes in the country? He invites the reader to reconsider certain assumptions: “Other, darker truths, sometimes involving figures above suspicion,” could be hidden behind the acts systematically attributed to armed gangs.

Poète Silencieux [Silent Poet] embraces the politically engaged dimension of his narrative: “This novel doesn’t just observe and describe. On a certain level, it underlines the flaws that are eating away at Haitian life,” he explains, citing in particular “the corruption that reigns within the National Police” and “the pathological thirst for power among our leaders.” His objective, he says, is to provoke awareness: “The main message of this book is directly linked to the debate I am trying to raise.” He clarifies: “Banditry is not the primary source of all criminal activity in this country.” According to the author, “there are other, unsuspected, and well-oiled mechanisms that keep the murderous machine running in Haiti.” [. . .]
