By Breaking Belize News Staff: Cayo police have formally arrested and charged Melvin Quischan of Bullet Tree Falls Village in connection with a fatal motorcycle crash that claimed the life of 49-year-old Auria Ramos.
The accident occurred on Friday night, May 22, shortly after 10:00 p.m., in the Santa Familia Village area. Police say Quischan was driving a Lifan motorcycle with Ramos as his passenger when he allegedly lost control of the motorcycle and veered off the road.
Ramos, also of Bullet Tree Falls Village, was transported for medical treatment but later succumbed to her injuries at the San Ignacio Community Hospital.
Quischan, who police reportedly identified as a member of the Belize Coast Guard, has since been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, and failing to provide a specimen.
Police had previously indicated that responding officers detected the smell of alcohol after the crash and that a sample was requested from Quischan, but he allegedly refused to comply.
The matter remains before the court.
