By Zoila Palma: Total domestic exports for Belize recorded a decline in April 2026, according to data released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB). Earnings totaled $42.8 million for the month, a decrease of 4.1 percent, or $1.9 million, compared to $44.6 million in April 2025.
The overall decline was mainly attributed to weaker performance in several major export commodities.
The sharpest fall was recorded in molasses, which dropped by $2.3 million, falling from $2.3 million in April 2025 to virtually no shipments in April 2026.
Banana exports also registered a significant decrease, falling by $2.0 million from $7.9 million to $5.9 million, reflecting reduced export volumes during the month.
Red kidney beans saw a steep reduction in earnings, declining by $1.3 million from $1.7 million to $0.3 million due to lower shipment volumes.
Formal cattle exports also dipped by $0.3 million, moving from $2.3 million to $2.0 million, while crude soybean oil exports decreased slightly from $1.3 million to $1.0 million.
Despite the overall downturn, several commodities posted gains.
Sugar exports led the increase, rising by $2.5 million from $19.0 million in April 2025 to $21.5 million in April 2026, supported by stronger export volumes. Marine products also showed strong growth, increasing by $1.9 million from $3.4 million to $5.4 million, driven by higher shipments of lobster meat and conch.
