By Breaking Belize News Staff: After more than seven months on remand, Armon Cain is out on bail after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions instructed that an attempted murder charge against him be withdrawn.
Cain appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate on Monday afternoon, where the attempted murder charge was formally withdrawn. A second charge of use of deadly means of harm with intent to cause dangerous harm was also amended to use of deadly means of harm with intent to cause grievous harm.
The charges stem from a 2025 stabbing incident.
The Chief Magistrate explained that Cain’s matter will proceed summarily in the lower court, but no plea can be taken from him at this time because the court is still awaiting his psychiatric evaluation and mental health records.
Cain, who is believed to have mental health challenges, had been on remand at the Belize Central Prison pending a psychiatric evaluation. The court also asked for family intervention to assist in obtaining his records from the Psychiatric Clinic and, if possible, to help secure a private evaluation, as the government remains without a doctor to conduct evaluations for remanded inmates.
In the meantime, Cain was offered bail in the sum of $3,000 plus one surety of the same amount, which he met.
As a condition of bail, Cain must stay at least 100 feet away from the virtual complainant.
His next court date is set for July 1, 2026.
According to information before the court, the stabbing allegedly occurred after the complainant attacked Cain with a piece of stick. Cain is accused of stabbing the complainant during the incident, but the defense position appears to be that he acted in self-defense.
