By Zoila Palma: Following reports that licensed firearms that had been stolen were used for crimes, the Belize Police Department said that the Firearms & Ammunition Control Board would examine safekeeping habits for licensed gun holders.
During an interview with 7News Belize, Chairman Francis Usher explained that the board is looking at ensuring licensed firearms are safely kept.
“So upon assuming my position on the board and with the other board members, we discussed what other measures we can put in place to ensure that firearms are safely kept when not being carried. So, some of the requirements that we now have are to have a safe for your firearm, to have cameras around the house, and additional firearms while not, or additional measures while not necessary, but that we try to impart on firearm owners to have simple things as far as fences, even as far as dogs. All of these things add toward more security and safer gun ownership,” Usher explained.
In addition, Usher says that when it comes to licensed firearms being stolen, the Belize Police Department would have to investigate the circumstances surrounding the theft of the weapon.
“So as far as the charges, that would be a police matter and I would have to defer to my other board colleagues from a legal point of view for them to discuss what charges, but I would assume it would depend on the circumstances surrounding the theft of the firearm, whether there was negligence or not. So, I would assume it would come down to that, but I would defer to their judgment there,” Usher said.
