Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas initiative concludes with launch of Digital Chalupa Game in Belize

By Zoila Palma:  On Monday, the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative officially concluded with the launch of a digital Chalupa game aimed at promoting climate resilience, conservation, and social inclusion across Belize.

The closing event, held at the University of Belize, brought together government representatives, community partners, students, and international stakeholders to mark the end of the three-year programme. The initiative focused on strengthening resilience to climate change while advancing inclusive, community-driven conservation strategies.

Implemented through a partnership involving the Wildlife Conservation Society and the International Institute for Sustainable Development, the CAPA Initiative supported communities in developing sustainable livelihoods, restoring ecosystems, and increasing participation among women and marginalized groups in environmental decision-making.

Among its key achievements were support for women-led fisheries and seaweed farming groups, forest restoration and regenerative agriculture projects, climate vulnerability assessments, and the development of climate- and gender-responsive management plans. A national gender strategy was also established to guide more inclusive conservation efforts.

The newly introduced Digital CAPA Chalupa Game is designed as an interactive educational tool, translating complex concepts such as climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and gender equity into an accessible format for students and communities.
