During his address at the National Agriculture and Trade Show 2026, Guyana’s Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha outlined a regional vision to cut the Caribbean’s food import bill by 25 percent while building a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector.
He emphasized the need for climate-smart farming, improved infrastructure, stronger agro-processing industries, and better intra-regional trade systems. The minister also highlighted the role of innovation and digital technology in modernizing agriculture.
A major focus of the strategy is youth involvement, with Mustapha stressing that the future of agriculture depends on attracting and empowering young people through education, training, and investment opportunities.
He concluded by calling for stronger regional cooperation, noting that a unified Caribbean approach is essential to achieving long-term food security.
