By Breaking Belize News Staff: A traffic violation in Belize City has led to a six-month prison sentence and eventual deportation for a Honduran national who was found to be in the country illegally.
Thirty-eight-year-old Jayron Yanin Medina Mejia, a welder residing in Camalote Village, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 on Monday, April 20, 2026, where he was charged with failing to present a valid visitor’s permit to an Immigration Officer on demand. Mejia pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 plus $5 in court costs, payable forthwith. In default of payment, he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
Shortly after, Mejia was taken before the Traffic Court, where he faced an additional charge of riding a bicycle contrary to the flow of traffic. The incident occurred on Friday, April 17, 2026, along Vernon Street in Belize City. Mejia pleaded guilty, telling the court, “I am guilty because I nuh know the streets like that,” explaining that it was his first time navigating traffic in the city.
Despite the guilty plea, the presiding Magistrate exercised discretion and dismissed the traffic charge under Section 59B, imposing no penalty.
According to reports, police from the King Street Police Station detained Mejia around 2:30 p.m. on April 17 after observing the traffic violation. Immigration authorities were called in, and upon questioning, Mejia was unable to produce identification, claiming his documents had been stolen. Subsequent checks with the Honduran Embassy confirmed his identity, but no legal entry record was found in Belize’s immigration system.
As a result, Mejia was deemed to be in the country illegally. He is currently serving his six-month sentence and will be deported to Honduras upon completion of his time or upon payment of the fine. Mejia had inquired about voluntary departure, but was informed that he must first satisfy the court’s order.
