By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City motorcyclist left court frustrated on Monday after being fined $255 for running a red light—an amount he says is far higher than expected.

Kingsley B. Augustus, of the Saint Martin de Porres area, appeared before the Traffic Magistrate in Court #4 where he was charged with failing to conform to an electronic signal. The charge stems from an incident on April 13, 2026, at the intersection of Central American Boulevard and Neal’s Pen Road.

According to the allegations, Augustus, who was driving a blue AKT motorcycle, failed to stop when the traffic light turned red.

Unrepresented in court, Augustus pleaded guilty and admitted to committing the offense. He was subsequently fined $250 plus an additional $5 in court costs.

The penalty appeared to catch him off guard. In court, Augustus said he believed the fine for such an offense would have been around $50. The presiding Magistrate clarified that the offense carries a maximum fine of up to $500 under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act.

After sentencing, Augustus left the courtroom visibly upset. Speaking outside, he expressed frustration with the amount imposed, describing it as excessive for the violation.

Under the law, the $255 fine represents just over half of the maximum penalty that can be imposed for failing to obey a traffic signal.
