By Zoila Palma: Iran is considering participation in potential peace talks with the United States in Pakistan, according to a senior Iranian official, signaling a shift in tone as diplomatic efforts intensify ahead of an expiring ceasefire.
The official said Tehran is “positively reviewing” the possibility but stressed that no final decision has been made, Reuters report.
The potential talks come as Pakistan works to mediate between the two sides, including efforts to address a key obstacle: the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.
Officials indicated that Islamabad’s intervention could help pave the way for Iran’s participation, particularly as earlier statements from Tehran had ruled out attending and warned of retaliation against U.S. actions.
Tensions remain high as the two-week ceasefire, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 7, approaches its expiration. The truce has been strained by recent developments, including the U.S. seizure of an Iranian cargo ship accused of attempting to bypass the blockade. Iran condemned the move and warned of retaliation, while also maintaining that its military capabilities, including its missile program, are not open to negotiation.
Diplomatic prospects are further complicated by disagreements over negotiation terms.
