By Zoila Palma: Today, Pope Leo XIV said he has no interest in debating U.S. President Donald Trump, stressing that his ongoing trip to Africa is focused on peacebuilding rather than political disputes, CNN reports.
Speaking to reporters aboard a papal flight from Yaoundé, Cameroon, to Luanda, Angola, the pontiff said recent tensions had distracted from the purpose of his visit.
The pope noted that commentary surrounding his 11-day, four-country tour had been shaped by what he described as a “political situation” following public criticisms from Trump.
The U.S. president had launched attacks on the pope through his Truth Social platform ahead of the April 13 departure, with remarks continuing for several days.
Leo said the resulting media coverage had created “a certain narrative” about the visit that was not entirely accurate. He argued that much of the reporting had focused on interpreting statements rather than the substance of his message, which centers on peace and unity.
The pope emphasized that his visit to Africa—home to about one-fifth of the world’s Catholic population—is pastoral in nature.
