By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a teenager following a gun attack Wednesday night in Punta Gorda Town.
Officials say that around 7:56 p.m. on March 4, 2026, police received reports of shots fired in the New Road area. Officers responded to the scene where they discovered the motionless body of 17-year-old Jimmy Cus, a laborer of Stann Creek Street, Punta Gorda Town.
Police also visited the Punta Gorda Community Hospital, where they encountered 18-year-old Darwin Meraz, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Initial investigations indicate that around 7:55 p.m., Cus and Meraz were walking along Cero Road when an unknown gunman ambushed them and fired several shots in their direction.
Cus sustained fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead at the Punta Gorda Community Hospital at 10:01 p.m.
Meraz received what police described as superficial gunshot injuries.
Crime Scene investigators processed the area and recovered several expended shells and a projectile as part of the investigation.
Police say the motive for the attack is unknown and investigations continue.
