Roy Davis dies at 72; journalist and man of letters

By Aaron Humes: Veteran court reporter, journalist, photographer and writer Roy Davis died, a colleague confirmed to Breaking Belize News, on Wednesday night. He was 72.

Davis retired some years ago and was said to have battled a liver condition. He is survived by his daughter.

According to the Amandala, he began work as a reporter for The Reporter newspaper in 1979, before moving to the Amandala four years later. He continued to write on and off for both papers, as well as the Belize Times and the defunct Labour Beacon, as well as supplying stories, mostly from the court beat, to local television stations Channel 5 News, LOVE FM, and Channel 7 News.

Davis was also known as a creative writer, having produced a book of short stories about the infamous trickster spider Anansi titled ‘All in One,’ as well as a compendium of poetry describing his own personal journey through drug addiction and brief incarceration in prison titled ‘Fooley Me,’ released in 2022.

He is remembered by all who knew and worked with him. May he rest in peace.
