By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Wagiya SC will go into Saturday’s Premier League of Belize Closing Championship fixture against Benque United in Belmopan severely depleted, with three starters unavailable due to suspension.

Levi Pixabaj and Colombian Jesús Giovanni Martínez remain sidelined after being sent off two weeks ago in Wagiya’s match against Belmopan. Both players received two‑match bans for rough play, and although they have already missed one match — this past Sunday against Progresso — they still have one game left to serve.
Wagiya insist that the incident in Belmopan was triggered by the Belmopan player, whom they accuse of manhandling Martínez before the confrontation escalated. The club maintain that the officiating failed to recognize the initial provocation, leaving them feeling unfairly punished.

They will now also be without Joshua Meléndez, who was shown a red card on Sunday against Progresso. The PLB has not yet announced the length of Meléndez’s suspension, leaving Wagiya uncertain about how long they will be without him.

The situation adds to the club’s growing frustration. Wagiya have openly expressed dissatisfaction with recent officiating, feeling that several decisions have gone against them at key moments. What makes matters worse is their current form: the southern club have lost four consecutive matches and remain without a point in the Closing Championship.

It is a difficult moment for one of Belize’s most historic sides. Wagiya are the second‑oldest club in the PLB, with only Verdes having played longer at the top level. Yet they now find themselves bottom of the table once again, struggling to convert effort into results as suspensions further stretch their squad ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Benque United.
