By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 35-year-old Belize City laborer was fined after pleading guilty to harming his girlfriend during a domestic dispute earlier this month.
Karl Lambey appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he admitted responsibility for assaulting his girlfriend on Wednesday, January 14, 2025.
Lambey was initially charged with harm and threat of death; however, during the reading of the facts, the prosecutor conceded that there was no evidence to support the threat allegation. That charge was subsequently withdrawn, leaving Lambey to answer only to the harm charge.
Upon pleading guilty, Lambey told the court, “I nuh remember nothing,” claiming he was intoxicated at the time of the incident, but nonetheless accepted responsibility for his actions. In mitigation, he begged the court for leniency, reiterating that alcohol played a role in the assault.
According to police, the virtual complainant reported that the couple had an argument after Lambey accused her of being unfaithful. During the confrontation, Lambey allegedly became aggressive, pointed in her face, grabbed her around the neck, and slammed her into a sofa. The woman said she feared for her life and sought police intervention.
A medical examination later classified her injuries as harm.
For his guilty plea, Lambey was fined $900 plus $5.00 cost of court, which he has until May 1, 2026 to pay. Failure to do so will result in four months’ imprisonment.
The court noted that this is not Lambey’s first encounter with the law. In 2024, he was convicted for threatening wordsand fined $150. He has also previously faced a harm charge that was dismissed and was once the subject of a breach of protection order filed by a former girlfriend.
