By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The national title is on the line tonight as Verdes FC host Progresso FC in the decisive second leg of the 2025–26 Premier League of Belize (PLB) Opening Championship Final at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm with the aggregate score locked at 0–0 after last Sunday’s tense stalemate in Orange Walk.
First Leg Recap
The opening match may have ended scoreless, but it was defined by bold coaching decisions. Progresso’s Charlie Slusher stunned many by withdrawing two of his lethal trio — Rene Leslie and Keydenshaay Bowen — early in the second half, leaving top scorer Latrell Middleton isolated up front. Middleton came close late, missing golden chances in the 79th and 95th minutes.
On the other side, Verdes’ Manu Can held back his deadliest striker, Desmond Wade, until the 87th minute. Wade’s cameo, though lively, was too short to change the outcome. Can also gambled by replacing offensive‑minded defender Darrel Myvett, who often pushes forward on set pieces, with Colombian attacker Daiver Vega in search of more firepower.
The Decider
Saturday night, all eyes will be on the coaches once again. Will Manu Can start Desmond Wade from the opening whistle, giving Verdes their most dangerous weapon for the full 90 minutes? Or will Charlie Slusher trust Leslie and Bowen with more time to do damage against the champions?
Verdes, seven‑time PLB winners, will lean on their home crowd in Benque Viejo as they chase an eighth crown. Progresso, making their first appearance in a PLB Final, are chasing history and must be clinical to upset the giants.
The stage is set. One team will lift the trophy tonight — the seasoned champions or the hungry challengers.
