CEO Williams reiterates stance on motorcycle training; seeks experienced riders to be certified trainers

By Zoila Palma:  CEO in the Ministry of Transport Chester Williams reiterated his stance on motorcycle training and how necessary it is.

“Let us reflect on the situation over the past 2 years, we have lost over 100 of our youths on our roads due to poor decision making while riding motorcycle. Is this what we want, to see our children, brothers, husbands, friends, and fathers dying while we sit helplessly and watch? Shouldn’t this awake something in us telling us that we need to act to protect our young people who are our future? I would want to think that the lather should be the case. Governance is never easy so is leadership, it places us in a position to make decisions that are unpopular. But should it be that we abandon what we are doing because it is unpopular or should we look at the good the decision is going to bring?,” Williams said.

Williams said that the Ministry is listening to all views and understand the concerns of all riders.

“It is our beliefs that we can come to some common ground in addressing this issue. Abandoning the training requirement must never be an option. Why because it is important?

What we can do however, is that those persons who have been riding motorcycles for 5 or more years with an unblemished record, instead of doing the full 30 hours training they can do a maximum of 9 hours refresher on the rules governing the use of motorcycles on the road,” Williams added.

Williams says that for those riding for less than 5 years and new applicants they must undergo the full training.

In addition, the Ministry will need trainers so they are seeking from among the pool of experience riders with unblemished record to be certified trainers.

CEO Williams said that cycling clubs can be trainers since they have membership and would be able to do the training at a much reasonable cost for their membership.

CEO Williams is scheduled to meet with cycling clubs in Belize City and he hopes to propose that they put together a team comprising of the different club members to work on the content of the training manual.
