By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Chester Williams, the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Transport is standing firm on the government’s decision to require formal motorcycle training, saying the measure is necessary to save lives and reduce the growing number of deadly road incidents involving young riders.
In a social media statement, the CEO noted that over the past two years, more than 100 youths have died in motorcycle accidents linked to poor decision-making and lack of proper riding skills. He said the tragedies should serve as a wake-up call, urging Belizeans to prioritize safety over convenience.
According to the CEO, the Ministry has been listening closely to public concerns but believes that eliminating the training requirement is not an option. Instead, the Ministry is looking at adjustments to make the process more reasonable for experienced riders.
He explained that motorcycle operators with five or more years of riding experience and an unblemished record may be eligible to take a shortened refresher course of up to nine hours, instead of completing the full 30-hour program. New riders and those with less than five years of experience will still be required to undergo full training.
The CEO added that the Ministry will develop a pool of certified trainers, including experienced cyclists and members of riding clubs, to help deliver high-quality training at affordable costs. He said consultations will continue as the Ministry refines the program.
