By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As the Premier League of Belize (PLB) Opening Championship semifinals kick off Saturday, the spotlight turns to the strikers who’ve lit up the season — and who now carry their teams’ hopes into the playoffs.
Leading the pack is Latrell Middleton of Progresso FC, the undisputed top scorer with 11 goals. Middleton’s consistency and finishing have earned him the “Goal Machine” tag, and with teammates Keydenshaay Bowen (9 goals) and Rene Leslie (6 goals) also in form, Progresso boast the league’s most prolific attacking trio. Together they have converted 26 of Progresso’s 31 goals.
Close behind is Jonard Castillo of Wagiya SC with 10 goals, whose side didn’t make the playoffs but whose individual brilliance deserves recognition.
Defending champions and regular season leaders Verdes FC feature Desmond Wade, who scored 7 goals in league play and added four more for Belize in the recent Concacaf Friendly Series.
Playoff contenders Port Layola Port Layola count on Gilroy Thurton (7 goals) to deliver in the final third.
Fourth-seeded Belmopan FC will be banking on Adrien Graffin and Dawoda Kamara — both with 6 goals apiece. Their chemistry and finishing will be key if Belmopan are to challenge top-seeded Verdes.
Like Progresso’s Rene Leslie and Belmopan’s American duo, Daijon Daniels of Napoles FC also scored six goals, rounding out a season in which attacking talent flourished across the league. However, as with Wagiya’s Jonard Castillo, Daniels is now out of the picture, with Napoles failing to reach the playoffs
With so much firepower on display, the PLB semifinals promise goals, drama, and standout performances. The Opening Championship title may well be decided by which striker rises to the occasion.
