By Zoila Palma:  Two people were shot dead in the central Kenyan town of Nanyuki amid protests over United States plans to establish an Ebola isolation centre at the nearby Laikipia Airbase. The deaths occurred during demonstrations on Monday, though the circumstances surrounding the shootings remain unclear and officials have yet to comment.

Hundreds of protesters marched through Nanyuki, located about 140 kilometres north of Nairobi, blocking roads and burning tyres as police used tear gas to disperse crowds. One victim was shot near the airbase and later died after being taken to hospital by friends, while the second man was reportedly brought to the hospital already dead by soldiers, BBC reports.

One of the victims was identified by relatives as 27-year-old Charles Mang’aro Mwangi. His family said he was not involved in the demonstrations and had gone to visit a friend after returning from work. His mother, Joyce Wangari, said he was simply walking along the road when he was shot and that the family has received no communication from police regarding his death.

The protests were triggered by plans to establish a 50-bed Ebola isolation centre staffed by US medics to treat American citizens affected by the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although Kenya has not recorded any Ebola cases, the proposal has raised concerns among residents and health groups over possible cross-border infection risks.
