By Breaking Belize News Staff: 31-year-old Anthony Carballo Jr., better known as “Lee Pena,” is back behind bars awaiting his sentencing after being found guilty of a double murder on San Pedro earlier this year.
Carballo Jr. was among four prisoners transported to Belize City today, but his trip turned out to be a “joy ride,” as his sentencing exercise was postponed until Friday, November 7. Justice Candace Nanton is expected to hand down the sentence following the mitigation plea, where Carballo Jr. is expected to call two character witnesses on his behalf.
On August 22, 2025, Justice Nanton found Carballo guilty of the execution-style murders of Deon Faber and Allen Martinez, which occurred in broad daylight on March 21, 2019, in San Pedro around 1:45 p.m. Carballo faces the possibility of two life sentences—either with parole eligibility or a fixed term of imprisonment.
Initially, Carballo was jointly charged with 31-year-old Darrell Grant, but the court later acquitted Grant after ruling that the evidence did not prove he acted jointly with Carballo at the time of the killings.
The case, prosecuted by Crown Counsel Robert Lord of the DPP’s office, was based primarily on circumstantial evidence, including over 40 video footages. One video showed two men approaching the victims’ home and fleeing 35 seconds after gunfire erupted. Although the actual shooting was not captured, other footage and witness descriptions linked Carballo to the scene.
Key evidence also came from a statement given by Faber’s wife, who witnessed the shooting but passed away during the pandemic before the trial. In her 2019 statement, she described how two men came to her home, one of whom opened fire—killing both Faber and Martinez instantly.
Despite being identified as the shooter, Carballo chose to remain silent during his trial. His co-accused, Grant, testified that he was merely there to buy marijuana and denied any involvement in the murders.
Justice Nanton ultimately ruled that the prosecution failed to prove a joint enterprise, acquitting Grant but convicting Carballo Jr. for the double murder.
Carballo’s fate will be sealed on Friday when the court decides whether he will spend the rest of his life in prison or serve a fixed term.
