By Breaking Belize News Staff: 26-year-old Elroy Bainton, an Aerodispatch employee with the Airport Authority, is a free man after a charge of common assault against him was withdrawn in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

Bainton, a resident of Ladyville, had been accused of assaulting his estranged girlfriend during a domestic dispute. Although he initially pleaded guilty to the charge on Tuesday, the case was later dropped after the victim requested no further court action.

Reports indicate that despite the criminal charge being withdrawn, the woman took the matter to the Belize Family Court, where she successfully applied for a protection order against Bainton.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, November 2, 2025, around 7:30 p.m., when the woman and Bainton—who had been living together for about two years—got into a heated argument at their apartment complex. The woman told police that while she was trying to put their seven-year-old son to bed, Bainton began hurling insults, then allegedly placed a knife to her neck, pulled her by the hair, and hit her on the right hand.

She later sought medical attention, and a doctor observed bruises to her cheekbone and the right side of her neck. Ladyville Police subsequently charged Bainton with common assault.

When brought before the Chief Magistrate earlier this week, Bainton told the court that the complainant was outside ready to withdraw the case. Though he reluctantly entered a guilty plea, proceedings were stood down to confirm Tillett’s intentions. By Tuesday evening, after she confirmed she did not wish to proceed, the charge was officially withdrawn, and Bainton was released.

While he is now free of the criminal charge, the protection order from the Family Court remains in place.
