By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Belize People’s Front (BPF), Nancy Marin, has issued a strongly worded statement condemning what she describes as the government’s “grossly inadequate” response to the growing number of femicides in Belize. Marin’s remarks come amid public outrage over a series of recent killings of women across the country.
In her statement titled “The Alarming Rise of Femicide in Belize,” Marin said the situation has reached the level of a national crisis. “Each case is more brutal and senseless than the last,” she said. “I place full responsibility on the state for its continued failure to protect the women and children of this nation. The repeated excuse that ‘women do not want to press charges’ is unacceptable.”
Marin, who founded and operated Belize’s first Victim Support Unit nearly two decades ago, said she has witnessed firsthand the system’s shortcomings. “For over 18 years, I have worked on the frontline of this issue,” she explained. “Together with law enforcement officers like Densdale Thompson and Chester Williams, we saw the deep flaws within the system — and we worked tirelessly to address them.” She blamed political interference for the closure of the unit, claiming that successive administrations have allowed egos and personal animosities to block meaningful reform.
Calling for urgent legislative and policy action, Marin urged the government to move beyond symbolic gestures. “The perfunctory condolences after each murder, and the expensive conferences that yield no tangible results, are not enough. Belize does not need more talk; we need decisive action,” she declared.
Marin reiterated the demand for the implementation of the death penalty, a public sex offenders registry, and chemical castration for convicted sexual predators.
“These are not extreme measures,” Marin said. “They are necessary steps to protect the most vulnerable members of our society and to send a clear message that violence against women and children will not be tolerated. We need leaders who will step out of their comfort zones and confront this crisis with the seriousness and urgency it demands.”
