By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 45-year-old former security guard has been fined after pleading guilty to possession of crack cocaine following his arrest in a known drug area of Belize City.

Marcos Antonio Popper, of Antonio Soberanis Street in the Belama Phase 1 area, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3 earlier this week. He was charged with possession of a controlled drug after police found an undetermined quantity of crack cocaine in his possession.

The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, when officers conducting mobile patrol in Taylor’s Alley became suspicious of Popper’s behavior. According to police, he appeared nervous and acted suspiciously upon noticing their presence. A search was conducted, and officers discovered a matchbox in his front pants pocket containing a small amount of a white substance suspected to be crack cocaine. The quantity was reportedly too small to register on a scale.

In court, Popper pleaded guilty to the charge and asked for leniency, stating, “Give me a chance to pay, please.” The court noted that he had no prior convictions, making him a first-time offender.

Taking into account his guilty plea, apparent remorse, and clean record, the Senior Magistrate imposed a non-custodial sentence. Popper was fined $300 plus $5 in court costs, totaling $305. He has until July 31, 2026, to pay the fine, in default of which he will serve three months in prison.

The conviction leaves Popper with a criminal record but spares him immediate imprisonment.
