By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 32-year-old Munoz Alley resident has been remanded to prison after being charged with promoting gang-related activity, an offense under the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act.

Steven Barrington Flowers appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 on Friday afternoon, where he was accused of displaying gang-related hand signs associated with the Majestic Alley Crips (MAC) in photographs.

Flowers, who recently completed a prison sentence less than two weeks ago, insisted he was not promoting gang activity, claiming the images were old photos from his Facebook page and that he was merely imitating gestures he had seen in music videos during his youth.

The court explained that the offense carries a fine of up to $5,000 or a sentence of up to five years. After reviewing his record, which reportedly includes five prior convictions for violent offenses, the Senior Magistrate advised that he could be facing between 18 months to two years in prison if convicted.

Flowers pleaded for leniency, telling the court he did not wish to return to jail and asked whether a fine could be considered instead. However, the Magistrate told him that, given the nature of the charge, a fine would not be appropriate.

When Flowers continued to deny promoting gang activity and appeared uncertain about his plea, the court entered an equivocal not guilty plea on his behalf. The matter has been adjourned to December 19, 2025.

Because the offense is classified as gang-related, Flowers is not eligible for bail at the Magistrate’s Court level and must spend at least 90 days on remand before applying for bail in the High Court. He was subsequently remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
