The Department of the Environment (DOE) within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management convened a workshop to begin the development of Belize’s next 10-Year National Environmental Policy and Strategy (NEPS) 2026-2036, National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) 2026-2031 and its Monitoring and Evaluation Framework. The workshop brought together government officials, technical experts, civil society representatives, academia, and stakeholders from across the country to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the previous NEPS (2014-2024), while charting the way forward for the next decade of environmental governance. The development of the new policy, strategy, action plan and monitoring framework is being undertaken through an inclusive, consultative and participatory process.
Participants at the workshop engaged in focused group discussions on policy and strategic priorities, existing frameworks, and challenges, generating valuable insights and recommendations that will guide the drafting of the new policy, strategy and action plan.
The National Environmental Policy and Strategy 2026-2036 will serve as a roadmap that will continue to guide Belize towards sustainable growth over the next decade, ensuring that the country strengthens its resilience to climate change, protects its biodiversity, prevents and controls pollution and balances environmental stewardship. This aligns with Belize’s national development goals and international commitments, while ensuring that environmental sustainability remains central to economic growth and social welfare.
