Prime Minister addresses Budna abduction in State of the Nation speech: ‘Justice will prevail’

By Aaron Humes: With regard to citizen security, Prime Minister John Briceño, during his State of the Nation address from Belmopan, noted a reduction in major crimes by three percent and murders by 20 percent through August.

But he singled out the August 22 incident of the alleged abduction of Joseph Budna in his native Orange Walk Town, reiterating that his Government did not, and would never, sanction the removal of any Belizean by extrajudicial extradition.

That line was met with applause as he added that whereever the Police investigations go, “justice will be applied and justice will prevail.”

Budna maintains that police officers, at least one of whom he recognizes, removed him forcefully from Belize, assaulted him and took him to Guatemala, where he is wanted after escaping a prison sentence six years ago.
