Andrew Munnings tax case causes online uproar, donation drives but funeral director expected to make hefty $80K payment and be released today

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Andrew Munnings, the director of Munnings Funeral Home, was sent to prison on Monday in relation to an ongoing case brought against him by the Belize Tax Service department, in which he allegedly owes a sum of approximately $172,000.

Munnings had been in court for months relating to this matter and based on legal submissions made to the court by his attorneys, he was fighting the case on the grounds that he is an aggregate service provider that offers a package which includes the service of multiple third-party service providers, for instance, casket makers, hearse drivers, florists, caterers, priests etc. His attorneys argue that in the administration of tax, if Munnings is taxed on the total sum including that paid to third-party service providers, not only is he paying tax on money that he does not personally receive, but hat money is being taxed twice – once by Munnings Funeral Home and again by the serve-provider when they receive payment for services rendered.

Breaking Belize News (BBN), however, understands Munnings family has been able to secure the funds to make the $86,000 minimum payment to guarantee his release from prison. That payment is expected to be made sometime today. Attorney OJ Elrington is reportedly assisting in this matter.

This comes after news broke yesterday followed by an outpouring of support for Munnings and backlash against the current tax scheme. Many supporters had even started efforts to raise money to assist Munnings.
