By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a first for global politics, Nepal’s new interim prime minister was chosen through Discord. After weeks of protests led mainly by young people, former chief justice Sushila Karki was voted in on the platform by tens of thousands of users and sworn in as the country’s first female leader. At 73, she is now the country’s first female leader, sworn in after weeks of chaos that left Nepal shaken.
The turmoil erupted when authorities banned Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X and other apps under new registration rules. For Nepal’s Gen Z, it was the last straw in a country already suffocated by corruption, joblessness, and unresponsive leaders. Protests exploded across Kathmandu, with demonstrators flooding the streets demanding change. Security forces fired tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds into crowds. In the fury that followed, rioters set fire to the Singha Durbar — Nepal’s parliament — along with media houses and the homes of senior politicians. By the time calm returned, more than 50 people were dead, including former First Lady Sujata Koirala, who was caught in the violence. Over 1,300 were injured, and the capital was under curfew.
Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was forced to resign, leaving a power vacuum. That’s when young activists took their fight online. On Discord, more than 145,000 members debated and voted in real time, settling on Karki — known for her fearless anti-corruption rulings — as the only leader they could trust. Her appointment was later formalized after talks with the president and military. One of her first acts was dissolving parliament and calling fresh elections for March 5, 2026.
The dramatic rise of a leader through an online poll has raised constitutional questions, but for many Nepalis it represents the power of a new generation. Families of the dead are demanding justice, and the protesters who burned the symbols of the old order say their struggle is just beginning. What started as outrage over the loss of social media has become a generational revolt — and Nepal now stands at a crossroads between chaos and the chance for real reform.
