By Zoila Palma: Ten people were killed and at least 61 others injured in central Mexico when a freight train collided with a double-decker passenger bus on Sunday, Reuters report.
The train operator, Canadian Pacific Kansas City de Mexico, said the bus attempted to cross in front of the moving train.
The crash occurred in an industrial zone along the highway connecting Atlacomulco, in the State of Mexico, to Maravatío in neighboring Michoacán.
Police confirmed that seven women and three men were among the dead. Several of the injured remain in serious condition, while others have already been released from hospitals.
Images from the scene showed the bus’s upper deck crushed and twisted by the force of the collision, as emergency responders worked to secure the area. The bus company, Herradura de Plata, has not issued a statement.
The tragedy highlights Mexico’s ongoing struggles with road safety.
Deadly bus crashes are common, with official figures showing nearly 1,900 highway fatalities in 2023 alone.
Earlier this year, more than 40 people died when a passenger bus traveling from Cancún to Tabasco struck a trailer truck and caught fire.
