By Breaking Belize News Staff: A family dispute has landed 34-year-old Francis Arana back before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, this time accused of stabbing both his sister and her common-law husband.
Arana, who just last week pleaded guilty to stabbing his brother-in-law Frank Stevens, was hit with a second charge of aggravated assault with a knife after his sister reported that he also cut her left arm during the same incident.
Stevens, a 45-year-old boat mechanic, told police he was attacked on the morning of August 27 while preparing to leave home. He said Arana stabbed him in the shoulder and neck, and when Arana’s sister tried to intervene, she too was injured. Police recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack.
In court this week, Arana initially pleaded guilty but quickly changed his stance, claiming he was acting in self-defense. “She try come whap me and I mi deh defend myself,” Arana told the Magistrate, who entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
Unlike his first case, Arana was unable to secure bail of $400 plus one surety and has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until bail can be met. His next court date is set for October 27, 2025, with strict conditions that he not contact or interfere with his sister or her family.
