By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Thursday that her administration is weighing the possibility of imposing tariffs on imports from countries without trade agreements with Mexico, including China.
The move forms part of “Plan Mexico,” a government initiative aimed at strengthening domestic industries as the country faces external trade pressures, Reuters reported.
Sheinbaum explained during her daily press conference that tariffs would target nations outside of Mexico’s formal trade pacts, signaling China as one of the key countries that could be affected.
However, she did not disclose which specific products or sectors may be subject to new levies. “
Mexico remains a member of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which succeeded NAFTA in 2020 following negotiations under U.S. President Donald Trump.
The deal plays a central role in shaping Mexico’s trade policies, with the three signatory countries required to hold a joint review every six years—a timeline that could influence how Mexico proceeds with potential tariff measures.
