By Zoila Palma: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has begun operations at a new detention center inside Fort Bliss, Texas, which is set to become the largest in the country.
Nicknamed the “Lone Star Lockup,” the facility opened over the weekend and is expected to expand from 1,000 to 5,000 beds, with more than $1 billion invested in construction, TIME reports.
ICE says the center will help relieve overcrowding at other detention sites and speed up deportation proceedings.
The project has sparked controversy over costs, transparency, and conditions. Immigration advocates warn that Fort Bliss’s remote location will limit access to legal counsel and medical care, raising risks of abuse and neglect.
Local leaders have also voiced concerns about the billion-dollar price tag and lack of clarity on how detainees will be treated. Protests greeted the opening, with activists comparing it to past detention camps criticized for inhumane conditions.
Supporters, including Texas Republicans, argue the facility will provide safe, modern housing and aid in enforcing immigration laws. The detention center is part of a broader Trump administration plan to expand immigration enforcement using military bases and private contractors.
Additional large-scale facilities are expected to follow, doubling detention capacity in Texas by the end of the year.
