By Zoila Palma: More than 100 environmental leaders, conservationists, and protected areas managers from across Belize convened today for the official opening of the National Biodiversity Dialogue, a two-day forum dedicated to strengthening biodiversity protection and sustainable resource management in the country.
Held in Spanish Lookout, the opening ceremony was marked by a keynote address from Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management.
Additional remarks were delivered by Valdemar Andrade of the Belize Marine Protected Areas Network (BMPAN) and Jose Perez of the Association of Protected Areas Management Organizations (APAMO).
The event also recognized several key figures for their outstanding contributions to Belize’s biodiversity initiatives.
Honorees included Orlando Habet, CEO Milagro Matus, Abil Castaneda, Executive Director of the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), Michael Lund, UNDP Belize’s Deputy Resident Representative, Dr. Kenrick Williams, and Hanah St. Luce Martinez, Director of The Nature Conservancy Belize.
Organizers say the Dialogue will serve as a vital platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and strategic planning to ensure the long-term health of Belize’s natural heritage.
