By Zoila Palma: A federal judge has blocked a Trump administration policy that barred migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border from seeking asylum, ruling it unconstitutional and beyond presidential authority, CNN reports.
U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss issued the decision Wednesday, stating that the administration had unlawfully bypassed immigration laws set by Congress.
The ruling halts a key element of U.S. President Trump’s immigration agenda, which critics say endangered lives and undermined legal protections for asylum seekers.
The lawsuit, led by the ACLU and other advocacy groups, challenged a 2024 proclamation that effectively shut down asylum access at the southern border.
Moss stayed the ruling for 14 days, giving the administration time to appeal. The Department of Homeland Security and Trump allies criticized the decision, calling it a threat to national security.
Despite recent declines in illegal crossings, advocates hailed the ruling as a major win for human rights and the rule of law.
