By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 delivered a mix of victories and stalemates, with River Plate and Mamelodi Sundowns securing wins while Fluminense and Inter Milan were held to draws.
At Lumen Field in Seattle, Argentina’s River Plate overcame Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1. Facundo Colidio opened the scoring with a header in the 12th minute, assisted by Marcos Acuña. Sebastián Driussi doubled the lead just three minutes into the second half, capitalizing on a defensive error. Urawa pulled one back in the 58th minute through Yusuke Matsuo, who converted a penalty. However, Maximiliano Meza sealed the win in the 73rd minute with another header from an Acuña corner.
Meanwhile, at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns edged past South Korea’s Ulsan HD 1-0. Iqraam Rayners netted the decisive goal in the 36th minute with a slick finish, following a precise through-ball from Lucas Ribeiro.
Fluminense of Brazil and Borussia Dortmund of Germany played out a 0-0 draw at MetLife Stadium in New York. Despite Fluminense creating multiple chances, Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel stood firm, denying efforts from Jhon Arias, Agustín Canobbio, and Everaldo.
In the final match of the day, Mexico’s Monterrey and Italy’s Inter Milan drew 1-1 at Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. Sergio Ramos put Monterrey ahead in the 22nd minute with a header from an Oliver Torres corner, but Lautaro Martínez equalized for Inter in the 67th minute after a well-worked Kristjan Asllani free-kick.
These results set the stage for an intense continuation of the tournament, with teams looking to build on their performances or bounce back from setbacks.
