By Zoila Palma: Today, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he is stepping down as leader of the governing Labour Party and will leave office within weeks, less than two years after leading the party to a landslide election victory in July 2024. Starmer said he will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new Labour leader is chosen, AP reports.
The announcement follows mounting pressure on Starmer amid declining popularity for both himself and the Labour government.
He becomes the sixth British prime minister in the past decade to announce an early departure from office. The formal process to choose his successor will begin on July 9, with nominations closing when Parliament begins its summer recess on July 16.
Former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has confirmed he will seek the Labour leadership and was greeted with loud cheers from Labour lawmakers upon his return to Parliament after winning a special election last week. Burnham was sworn in as a member of Parliament on Monday and received support from fellow Labour politician Wes Streeting, who said he would back Burnham’s bid for the top job.
Only members of Parliament are eligible to run for the Labour leadership. If Burnham is the sole candidate, he could be confirmed as party leader and prime minister within days.
