By Zoila Palma:  Protests intensified across downtown Los Angeles on Sunday after President Donald Trump deployed around 300 National Guard troops without the governor’s request, marking a rare federal intervention and escalating tensions over immigration raids.

Thousands of demonstrators clashed with law enforcement, blocking the 101 Freeway, torching self-driving cars, and throwing debris at police, AP reports.

Officers responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and crowd-control munitions. Several protesters were arrested, and police declared an unlawful assembly by evening.

The deployment follows a wave of immigration enforcement across Southern California, including arrests in downtown LA and suburbs like Paramount and Compton. Federal authorities said over 100 people have been detained in the past week.

Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass condemned the troop deployment as an overreach. “This is chaos provoked by the administration,” said Bass. Newsom demanded the Guard’s removal, calling it a violation of state sovereignty.

The White House defended the move, saying federal intervention was necessary due to “lawlessness” in the city.

This marks the first time in decades the National Guard was activated in a state without the governor’s request, echoing federal actions not seen since the civil rights era.
