The National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) 2025 officially opened with a vibrant ceremony that highlighted Belize’s commitment to agricultural excellence, youth engagement, and cooperative development. The event, held at the NATS Showgrounds in Belmopan, brought together farmers, stakeholders, students, and government officials in a celebration of national achievements in the agriculture sector.
The ceremony commenced with a welcome address by His Worship Mr. Pablo Cawich, Mayor of Belmopan, who underscored the significance of agriculture to national development and praised the hardworking men and women who feed the nation.
A special guest address was delivered by Ing. Raúl Antonio Rodas Suazo, Executive Director of the Organismo Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (OIRSA), who emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in ensuring food safety, plant and animal health, and sustainable agricultural practices across borders.
One of the highlights of the event was the official slashing of the 2025 Farmer of the Year Award recipients, in addition, winners of the National School Garden Competition were presented with awards for their innovative and sustainable school garden projects. These young agriculturists were applauded for their creativity and dedication to environmental stewardship and food production.
Recognition was also given to agricultural cooperatives through the Cooperative of the Year Awards. The Sayab Farmers Cooperative of San Antonio, Cayo, earned First Place for their excellence in cooperative management and production. Second Place was awarded to the Concepción Vegetable Farmers Cooperative of Corozal, who were praised for their dedication and community impact.
The event culminated with a keynote address by the Hon. Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, who commended the awardees and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to advancing the agriculture sector. Minister Mai noted that this year’s show theme underscores the role of innovation, resilience, and partnerships in building a sustainable food system for Belize.
The National Agriculture and Trade Show 2025 continues throughout the weekend with exhibitions, live demonstrations, entertainment, and opportunities for farmers, agro-processors, and entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services.
