By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize Post Office employee is out on bail after being charged with an unusual and serious offense involving tampering with mail.

Tyrone Miles Davis, a 41-year-old Postal Clerk 1 and resident of the Cet Site area in the Saint Martin’s de Porres neighborhood, was arraigned on Thursday morning in Court #6 before a Senior Magistrate. He is accused of opening a postal packet, an act contrary to his duty as a postal employee.

The charge stems from an incident that allegedly occurred between April 28 and May 13, 2025. Davis is accused of unlawfully opening a mail item. The matter came to light following a report by his supervisor, who noticed irregularities during a routine inspection at the Belize City Post Office on April 25.

Two foreign postcards on Davis’s desk reportedly raised red flags. A subsequent investigation by the Northside Crimes Investigation Branch uncovered surveillance footage and led to Davis’s detention on May 13. Though Davis told police the mail had been returned, the supervisor claimed no official record showed the packet’s return. The missing mail was eventually found, but investigators noted it was torn on the side.

Davis appeared unrepresented in court and pleaded not guilty to the charge. While the prosecution did not object to bail, it requested conditions. Bail was granted at $1,500 with one surety. As part of the conditions, Davis is barred from contacting the virtual complainant or any workplace witnesses who gave statements and must remain at least 100 feet away from the complainant.

The court also expressed uncertainty about Davis’s continued employment, hinting that disciplinary action from the Post Office may follow. Davis secured bail by noon and is scheduled to reappear in court on July 15, 2025.
