By Zoila Palma: Pope Leo XIV met Thursday with His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, who invited the new pope to visit Kyiv and presented a list of Ukrainian prisoners held by Russia.
The private audience was one of Leo’s first since his May 8 election, AP reports.
While the Vatican issued no statement, the meeting reaffirmed the pope’s call for a negotiated end to the war and support for prisoner exchanges and the return of children taken to Russian-occupied territories.
Pope Leo has repeatedly voiced solidarity with Ukraine, urging a “just and lasting peace.” However, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said a papal visit to Kyiv remains “premature.”
Leo will be formally installed as pope on Sunday, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. Vice President JD Vance expected to attend.
