By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two Belize City men accused in the shooting death of Elwin “Bobo Youth” Lewis in March 2024 have been formally committed to stand trial for murder in the June session of the High Court.
Travis Jamaal Herbert, 22, a construction worker of Iguana Street Extension, and Robert Emmanuel Arnold, 21, of Antelope Street, appeared unrepresented on Friday before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 for the conclusion of their Preliminary Inquiry (PI). The magistrate ruled there was sufficient evidence to commit them to trial, which is set to begin on June 10, 2025.
The court heard that the prosecution, led by a police sergeant, submitted over ten witness statements, several documentary exhibits, including the post-mortem and autopsy report, as well as multiple DVDs containing video evidence.
The men were given their alibi warnings and instructed to submit in writing the names of witnesses they intend to call in their defense within one week. Herbert named three female witnesses, including his sister. Arnold did not name any witnesses during the hearing.
The two accused are charged in connection with the March 22, 2024, fatal shooting of Lewis, a 43-year-old labourer of Plues Street. Lewis was gunned down while riding his motorcycle along Antelope Street Extension, near Gwen Lizarraga High School. Police investigations revealed that two men on a motorcycle approached him from behind and opened fire. He later succumbed to his injuries at the KHMH at 5:25 p.m.
Surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts led police to identify Herbert as one of the shooters. Herbert was the first to be charged, appearing in court on May 6, 2024. Arnold was charged on June 25, 2024.
Both men remain on remand at the Belize Central Prison, as bail for murder charges can only be sought through the High Court. Before leaving court, Arnold asked how long one has to remain in prison before qualifying for bail. The magistrate advised that bail in such cases must be pursued through legal counsel in the High Court.
