By Zoila Palma: The discovery of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge’s body in the pool of Double Day Hotel on Thursday has sparked national outrage in Guyana, leading to the torching of the hotel and the owners’ home by angry residents, Stabroek news reports.
Adrianna was reported missing on Wednesday during a family outing at the hotel in East Bank Essequibo.
Her body was found in the pool nearly 24 hours later, after police initially claimed she had been seen leaving in a vehicle—a statement later admitted to be incorrect.
Frustration over the police response and perceived attempts to mislead the public led to violent protests.
Residents looted and set fire to the hotel and later burned the two-storey home of the hotel owners in Vergenoegen, as police struggled to contain the unrest.
President Irfaan Ali has ordered a full investigation, promising that “no resource or effort will be spared.”
Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force is reviewing its actions and has pledged transparency amid growing public calls for justice.
On Wednesday afternoon, Adrianna was reported missing by her family shortly after her family realized she was not among them during a family outing at the East Bank Essequibo hotel’s poolside. Adrianna, who had just completed the National Grade Six Assessment, was eagerly awaiting her placement results, as she was preparing for the future ahead.
What made matters worst is that the family’s efforts to secure help from the hotel’s management in searching for Adrianna were allegedly met with resistance. In addition, it is alleged that the hotel refused the family further access to the building, despite their pleas and growing desperation.
Adrianna’s family, still reeling from grief, has demanded accountability and answers.
