By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 49-year-old American teacher was fined $1,005 BZD on Monday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to importing cannabis into the country—hidden in his underwear.
Gregory Tremaine Thompson, a resident of Bluepoint Juniper Drive in Houston, Texas, arrived in Belize on Friday, April 4, aboard Southwest Airlines Flight #847 from William P. Hobby Airport. Authorities at the Philip Goldson International Airport became suspicious when a strong aroma of cannabis was detected during a routine baggage check.
Customs Examiner Dwight Wade reported that the smell appeared to come from Thompson himself. When asked directly, Thompson admitted to having cannabis in his possession and retrieved a transparent plastic bag containing the drug from inside his underwear. A subsequent search revealed no additional contraband, but officers confirmed the bag contained approximately 10 grams of cannabis concealed within dryer sheets.
At his arraignment Monday evening, Thompson—unrepresented by legal counsel—pleaded guilty to the charge of importation of a controlled drug, specifically a Class B substance. He addressed the court briefly, stating, “I understand the charge. I apologize firstly and I have learned a lesson… I didn’t do research before coming here.”
Magistrate imposed a fine of $1,000 plus $5 in court costs, to be paid immediately. Thompson complied, avoiding a default sentence of six months in prison. After the hearing, he declined to speak with the media and quickly left the courthouse in a waiting vehicle.
